Why Tik Tok is TRASH

Q. What happens when you give untalented teenagers too much attention?

  1. They became very problematic.

The other day I was scrolling through YouTube, and saw that Cody Ko posted a new video titled “Checking in on the Hype House”. Prior to watching this video, I had heard a little bit about the Hype House, but I didn’t know much. All I knew was that there was a group of cringey white kids who make tik- toks living in a house together. But after watching Cody’s video, I did some more research on the Hype House and other tik-tokers, and found out just how problematic tik tok is.

Invalid Fame

The reason why I think tik-tokers are so cringey, is the fact that they have no talent. They just dance or lip-sync a song in front of their phones. Many tik-tokers believe that they are so famous, that some of them even went on tour. It’s so baffling to me that people are actually going out of their way to pay and watch these people, for making 15 second videos of themselves doing nothing. I personally understand people making YouTubers famous, because YouTubers actually make content, which requires a level of talent, entertainment, hard work, and time. Tik Tok does not require any of these factors. I took about 30 minutes of my day to scroll through Tik Tok, and I found so many tik toks of people discussing drama between these “content creators”. The Hype House is especially problematic because the leader didn’t give credit to this girl named Daisy even though she paid $18000 for the house’s rent. In Cody’s video, he showed the Hype House on day-time television, and that one girl, Addison Rae, had the NERVE to say that hard work is required in order to join the Hype House. GIRL WHERE? WHERE IS THE HARD WORK? Why are we giving these people so much attention when they do nothing? All they know is how to be cringey in front of a camera. THAT’S IT. There are actually some tik-tokers who are funny, and deserve more recognition than these fools.

Tik Tok’s “UGLY” Ban

Recently, Tik Tok launched a new rule, which said that posts made by people too “ugly, poor, fat, or disabled” will be removed. Obviously this is super problematic because this limits posts to only be made by those “attractive” skinny white kids. If Tik Tok wants to continue to succeed, then it needs to be more inclusive with its audience. Removing “ugly, poor, fat and disabled” people is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. People of all types use Tik Tok as a place to have fun, and limiting the amount of people who can use it is because you don’t like the way they look is so ridiculous. Shame on Tik Tok for doing this, no matter what reason was behind this, it’s unjustifiable.

The “Hot” Pass

There’s a trend on Tik Tok, where many of these “hot” male tik-tokers (not hot according to me), are being exposed for using racial or homophobic slurs. Some don’t even use slurs, but make racist jokes that are very problematic considering the large audience they cater to. Mattia Polibio and Chase Hudson have a couple things in common. They both are males, both have a large following, both make disgustingly cringey tik-toks, oh and they have both been exposed for saying the n-word. The funny thing is, they didn’t apologize for it, because they believe they’re “hot” enough, and are too “famous” to apologize. I believe we shouldn’t be giving these people attention, because they will continue to think that they can do problematic things and get away with it, each time. Another tik-toker made some pro-life remarks and stated that “abortion is murder”, even though he was a guy and has no business telling a woman what she should do with her body. The saddest part is, he is still thriving and growing his account more and more everyday, without any consequences.

Drama and Bullying

Every year, an event is hosted, where people can meet their favourite online personalities. This event is called Playlist Live. While researching, I found out that a bunch of problematic stuff went down. Usually, I’m all here for the tea, but I literally giggled when I find out how stupid the Playlist Live “tea” really was. To cut things short, a bunch of white kids were fighting over middle school drama, because they’re white and privileged and have nothing better to do with their lives. Their actions reflect their audience, because a tik-toker, by the name of Sydneyvmay, gets bullied under each one of her posts, because there were rumours about a potential relationship between her and another tik-toker, named Bryce Hall. People are using the most minor situations as an excuse to bully a 16 year old girl, about anything. Whether it’s who she hangs out with, what she does, or how she looks. “Tik Tok drama” is not an excuse to bully someone, periodt.

What I Do Like About Tik Tok

To end this on a lighter note, there are some things that I do enjoy about Tik Tok. To start, I appreciate the fact that Tik Tok is allowing people of colour to embrace their culture to millions of people around the world. Tik Tok can also be really funny, with tik-tokers such as Rosa or the guy who pretends to act like a teacher. I feel that Tik Tok is all fun and games, until you start giving the wrong people attention. Support your fellow creators who actually do something for the world, instead of privileged crybabies who dance in front of their phones.
