The Ignorance of Celebrities During a Global Pandemic

The Coronavirus has taken the world by storm, affecting hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The news is everywhere, and a time like this you’re most probably relying on government leaders. But some of us, turn to our favourite celebrities to provide ourselves with hope and positivity. I was scrolling through Twitter, and found out that some very kind celebrities have donated millions of dollars to the Coronavirus relief, and are using their large platforms to promote social distancing. These celebrities include; Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Kylie Jenner, Taylor Swift and Shawn Mendes. On the other hand, there is a large group of completely ignorant celebrities who are living lavishly in their giant mansions in L.A. and are inconsiderate of people around the world.

The “Imagine” Video

Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, thought it was a great idea to gather a group of celebrities and record janky videos of themselves singing to “Imagine” by John Lennon. I understand that they thought it was spreading positivity, but, when there are people who are really struggling out there, what is this stupid video going to do for them? At a time like this, celebrities SHOULD donate whatever they can, since they’re so keen on the idea that “we’re all in this together”. Big news outlets such as the New York Times, BBC, Global News, and the Washington Post have all expressed outrage against this video, coming to a collective agreement that this video does nothing. No one asked for a video of celebrities peacefully relaxing in their multi-million dollar homes, singing. I found a video on twitter, making fun of these singing celebrities, and it perfectly sums up my thoughts on the situation.

Kim Kardashian

Once again, another celebrity decides to bring up news from four years ago, when there is a whole GLOBAL PANDEMIC happening. If you remember, back in 2016, Kanye West released his song called “Famous”, and there was this huge feud between Kim and Kanye v.s. Taylor Swift. Of course, in 2020, no one cares about their situation at all, until the full version of their phone call was released. The full version proved that Taylor Swift was innocent the entire time. That should’ve ended right there. Instead, Kim tweeted a 9- part rant on Twitter. This is very problematic because she should be using her platform to encourage others to stay home and disinfect, instead of airing out her dirty laundry on the internet. In response, Taylor Swift added the link to an organization that is helping to fight the Coronavirus.

Right now, you need to be practicing social distancing and washing your hands. It’s important to follow what is being suggested by the government. Remember, don’t listen to ignorant people who have power, and stay safe!
